Butterflies begin their lives as leaf-eating caterpillars. They change via a process known as metamorphosis. When fully grown, a caterpillar surrounds itself with a hard chrysalis, and inside this cocoon its body is broken down and completely changed. After four weeks, a fully formed butterfly emerges.
