Description:
The organ which helps us maintain balance is found in the inner ear, and is connected to the cochlea. It is known as the vestibular system. It is made up of three semicircular canals, which are filled with liquid. At the end of each canal is a sensor, or cupula, which measures the pressure of the liquid around it. When we move, the liquid in these canals moves as well, which causes the pressure on the cupula to change. By measuring these changes in pressure, the brain can interpret our movements and changes in balance.
