Description:
The Vikings were superb sailors with wooden longships that carried them across wild seas, riding the waves and dodging icebergs. In open seas, the Vikings relied on big, rectangular sails. To manoeuvre in coastal waters and rivers, they dropped the mast and rowed the ship instead. Light and slender, the Viking warship was the longest and quickest Viking vessel. Like other longships, the warship had a sail and mast, but could also be rowed. Depending on its size, it needed 24 to 50 oars.
