Caterpillars hatch from eggs laid by adult butterflies and moths. They eat plant leaves until fully grown, and then surround themselves with a chrysalis so that they can "metamorphose" or change into butterflies. As caterpillars eat leaves, they transfer energy from one stage of a food chain to another.
